Transparency

Being open about sayari nyuki

 Our commitment to being transparent

We see it as a fundamental right that every supporter knows exactly where every cent of their money is spent. So, as a small charity we take pride in being able to show exactly where every dollar goes. We publish our financial reports online about our income and spending to be open about our finances.

One of Inuka’s first aims was to create an organisation where people felt like they could trust us because they knew where their money was going. We did some research and learnt that over half of the donor population needs some level of transparency before they commit money to a cause. So we believe that visibility on where our funds go is one of the most important aspects of our charity operations.

Here is how we’re tackling this issue:

  • We are open about our mistakes and lessons learned on our website by publishing them online

  • We invite supporters to challenge our transparency and raise any questions or concerns

  • We show how we spend donors money in detail by publishing our reports online that are reader friendly

  • We regularly update our all of our donors on the projects they have donated to

What are we learning along the way?

As sayari nyuki continues to grow we are constantly learning, which also means we are making mistakes. As part of our commitment to being transparent, we are committed to being open out what we could have done better or the mistakes we’ve made so far. We hope that this will contribute to building a positive and trustworthy relationship with everyone who engages with sayari nyuki!

Lesson One - Be Patient

We’ve realised that not everything happens overnight. Everything takes time, which requires patience. Starting out, not seeing results straight away was quite frustrating and de-motivating. However, with time we were able to see the results for our efforts, including the successes in 2019 and our registration as an Australian Charity in 2020. The updates we receive from our partner NGO also help with motivation and setting the pace of patience, as we have seen the success of enrolment in our two schools - Cheti 7 and Cheti 8.

Lesson Two - Focus

As a new charity, we wanted to help everyone in every way possible. However, we realised that this wasn’t possible with our current structure and income. We’ve realised at this early stage in our venture that we need to focus on what is needed most at the current point in time. We figure this out by consulting with our in-country partner, CHETI NGO and develop ideas and raise funds together. Being able to focus our energy and resources on specific projects has helped with the success we have seen since we established in 2019.

Lesson Three - Keep Moving

The impacts of COVID-19 on the world had the potential to bring all operations to a standstill. Our plans to visit our projects over in Tanzania were cancelled and put on hold, the schools closed and we also had to cancel some fundraising events. However, this climate has allowed us to adapt and keep moving towards our goals. Even though there have been some changes in our operations and delays to plans, we are still able to provide the support we take pride in being able to deliver over in Tanzania.

Lesson Four - Embrace Change

Initially established to help support the education of over 1,000 children at Cheti Schools in Arusha, the vision of our charity soon expanded to include supporting the financial literacy and independence of women in the local community. As our vision expanded, it was time our identity as a charity did too. So we decided that it was time to change the name of our charity from sayari nyuki to Inuka. In Swahili, 'inuka' means 'rise up' - which is what we help the students, women and community supported by our initiatives to do. Our core values of education, empowerment, equity and environment are still essential to our mission of building stronger community in Tanzania.

Our Reports

We take pride in being open with our community and our supporters. So we are committed to publishing our reports that we generate to keep track of our progress, send to our partner NGO and use to help reach out for more potential funding.

Our Committee Members

Our Committee members are responsible for the responsible and ethical governing of Inuka. Maeve, Gina and Maggie are the committee members and Responsible Persons for Inuka. Zuma is the Director for Cheti NGO in Tanzania.

Our Research…

In addition to our on the ground work in Tanzania, we conduct extensive research through documents produced by other NGOs, governments, new reports and official websites.

We do this so we are well informed through qualitative and qualitative data about different circumstances and processes where we work in Tanzania, and also to understand how the wider community understands such situations.
